Fine Arts Dept. Opens Permanent Exhibition on Nakhon Si Thammarat World Heritage Site

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT — The Fine Arts Department has officially opened a permanent exhibition dedicated to Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat, following its recent designation as Thailand’s sixth cultural World Heritage site. This initiative aims to leverage the site's global recognition to attract more tourists and stimulate economic benefits for the region. Phanombut Chandrachoti, director-general of the Fine Arts Department, stated that the World Heritage status has placed Thailand in the global spotlight. He emphasized the department's commitment to collaborating with Nakhon Si Thammarat authorities for the ongoing conservation and restoration of Wat Phra Mahathat. Measures will be implemented to ensure the site's preservation meets UNESCO standards. He also highlighted the need for careful planning of any new constructions, including shops and facilities, to avoid diminishing the site’s cultural value. "I would like to congratulate the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat and all Thais. This is the third consecutive year that we have received World Heritage recognition," Phanombut said. "Hopefully, we will have another piece of good news in 2027." Looking ahead, Chiang Mai is being prepared for submission for World Heritage consideration in 2027, having been on UNESCO’s Tentative List since 2015. Several other Thai sites are also on the Tentative List, presenting potential future opportunities for recognition.
