Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a congratulatory message to Vietnam on its National Day, highlighting the resilience of its people and the friendship between the two nations. The message was shared by the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi on its social media accounts. Trump stated that Vietnam's independence is a testament to the strength and resilience of its people and "a legacy that continues to inspire the friendship our nations proudly share today." He also commended Vietnam's progress under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, emphasizing a shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and stability across the Indo-Pacific region. The former president praised Vietnam as "a partner with growing global leadership" to the U.S., specifically recognizing its role as a founding member of the Board of Peace. He expressed his desire to build on this progress and "work together to ensure shared prosperity and security in the future," wishing Vietnam "even greater success, peace, and prosperity." Vietnam and the U.S. normalized relations in July 1995 and upgraded their partnership in July 2013, leading to numerous high-level visits. Cooperation spans various fields including politics, diplomacy, economy, education, science and technology, defense, and security. In September 2023, they established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development. Under its one-party system, Vietnam pursues a pragmatic foreign policy aimed at maximizing national interests. Strengthening ties with the U.S. in recent years is seen as part of a strategy to balance its relationship with China. For Vietnam, a rapidly growing economy, the U.S. is a crucial trading partner and investor.
