Hanoi Considers Redevelopment of Hoan Kiem Lake Landmark Buildings

Hanoi is considering demolishing and rebuilding landmark buildings around Hoan Kiem Lake, including the 1985 city hall, as part of urban planning adjustments. The Department of Construction has launched a public consultation on proposals for the area, aiming to create a historical, cultural, and artistic space. The study covers 65.89 hectares and is guided by the capital's 100-year master plan. Key proposals include enlarging Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and developing a chain of squares and parks east of the lake, connected to the planned metro line No. 2's C9 station. This transit-oriented development zone would integrate culture, services, and retail. Notably, the plan includes the potential demolition of the Hanoi People's Council and People's Committee headquarters, built between 1985-1987, along with the Red Scarf Theater and Children's Palace block. A new nine-story building with four underground levels is being researched for the site. However, three French colonial-era buildings will be retained. At the Hanoi Post Office, the plan suggests recreating the architectural form of the former Bao An Pagoda in the courtyard. The original pagoda was demolished in 1888 for the post office's construction. New constructions will be controlled for height, massing, and sightlines to protect heritage views. Underground spaces spanning three to 3.5 basement floors are envisioned to combine transport, parking, retail, services, and culture, linking to the metro station. Public feedback will be collected until September 26, with an online consultation conference scheduled. This initiative reflects Vietnam's efforts to balance heritage preservation with modern urban development, a theme often discussed within the context of its rapid economic growth and strategic geopolitical positioning.
