MANILA, Philippines — The upcoming initial public offering (IPO) of Mynt Inc., the parent company of Philippine mobile payment giant GCash, is poised to energize the country's capital market. This landmark offering is seen as a potential economic catalyst, capable of attracting foreign direct investments—a much-needed boost to lift the Philippine economy. Regulators and government officials are highlighting its possible impact on trading activity, retail investment, and the burgeoning digital economy. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Francis Lim expressed his "fervent hope" that the GCash IPO will serve as a catalyst, particularly for the nation's capital market. The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) has also conveyed its optimism, anticipating that the debut listing could significantly boost trading activity and attract a surge of new retail investors. This is especially relevant as subscriptions to the IPO will be made accessible through GStocks, GCash's integrated stock-trading platform. "I am optimistic that this debut will drive strong market activity ahead of Q4. We expect to see a significant uptick in new retail investors," stated PSE President and Chief Executive Officer Ramon Monzon in a recent media interview. Complementing this outlook, Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque emphasized the broader economic implications. She noted that the widespread adoption of GCash and other digital payment platforms can empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to expand their market reach, particularly through e-commerce channels. "Companies like GCash and digital payments will really help MSMEs grow, as it will become easy for them to sell their products, especially on e-commerce platforms," Roque remarked. She further elaborated that digital payments could bridge geographical divides, making it easier for MSMEs to connect with and transact with customers in remote areas, thereby fostering greater participation in the digital economy. Mynt's journey towards public listing has advanced significantly, with the PSE approving its listing application on September 18. This approval positions the company for an IPO that is widely expected to be one of the largest in Philippine history. In separate statements, Ayala Corp. and Globe Telecom Inc., major stakeholders in Mynt, confirmed that the company received the PSE's official Notice of Approval for its listing application. This application covers up to 8.03 billion common shares, with an additional overallotment option for up to 1.20 billion secondary common shares. The PSE's green light came less than two weeks after Mynt secured a crucial pre-effective letter from the SEC for its proposed IPO. The planned offering by Mynt carries a maximum indicative price of P10 per share. Should the overallotment option be fully exercised, the IPO could generate gross proceeds amounting to as much as P92.32 billion, potentially solidifying its status as a monumental listing in the Philippines. The final offer price, however, will be meticulously determined through the established book-building and price-discovery process. The public offering is slated to run from October 6 to 12, with the tentative listing on the PSE scheduled for October 20. (Contributed story)
