Buddhists Across Laos Mark Beginning of Buddhist Lent

Buddhists across Laos on July 29, 2026, marked the beginning of Buddhist Lent (Boun Khao Pansa). The occasion, which falls on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the eighth lunar month, drew large numbers of worshippers to temples nationwide. In the capital, Vientiane, devotees participated in almsgiving ceremonies, continuing traditions passed down through generations. The day's observances included chanting, listening to Buddhist sermons, and other religious ceremonies. At several temples, donors also organized charity booths offering food, drinks, and refreshments to worshippers attending the celebrations. Boun Khao Pansa is one of the most significant events in the Buddhist calendar. It marks the beginning of the Rains Retreat (Vassa), during which monks remain at their monasteries for three months to devote themselves to meditation, religious study, temple maintenance, and the teaching of Buddhist principles.
