An Giang Tourism Department Reports on Canoe Capsize Tragedy Claiming 15 Lives

The An Giang Department of Tourism has submitted a formal report to the Provincial People’s Committee and the National Authority of Tourism regarding a recent canoe capsize incident that claimed 15 lives. The report, submitted on July 13, details the event and the legal standing of the involved firm, while also proposing new safety measures for maritime tourism. On July 11, at approximately 1:00 PM, the boat "Ocean Pearl Island" departed from Hon May Rut Ngoai bound for An Thoi International Port, carrying 32 Indian tourists, 3 crew members, and 1 guide. The vessel sank approximately 400 meters into its journey due to a mechanical failure. Rescue operations commenced, and by 3:40 PM, all 36 individuals on board were reached. While 21 people were saved, 15 Indian tourists tragically perished. The victims were part of a larger 105-person Indian tour group visiting Phu Quoc. The 3-day trip was organized by Tam A Tourism (Hanoi), with Minh Huy PQ acting as the local provider. The group was accompanied by three international guides, all holding valid licenses and proficient in English to assist the guests. Following the incident, the Department of Tourism dispatched officials to Phu Quoc to manage the crisis, coordinating with local authorities and providing support to the Indian Embassy. They also demanded that Minh Huy PQ submit all relevant documents for verification. The tragedy has led many tourism firms to suspend island tour operations to review their safety protocols, resulting in numerous canoes being idled at An Thoi International Port. However, the firm has not yet provided a comprehensive account of the tragedy, stating their current focus is on addressing the aftermath. The Department is urging agencies to implement stricter controls over transport vessels, specifically recommending more rigorous checks for island departures. They also called for more frequent weather updates, particularly during the rainy and peak tourist seasons. Furthermore, the Department proposes an evaluation of "SB-standard" (enclosed) canoes, as several recent fatal accidents have involved this type of vessel. The agency also demands enhanced training for crew and guides, emphasizing that staff must instruct tourists on the proper use of life-saving equipment before each trip.
