President Prabowo Attends BRICS Summit, WTO Reform and Local Currency Transactions on Agenda
Indonesian President Prabowo attended the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, in September 2026. Strategic issues including multilateral institution reform and local currency transaction mechanisms were discussed. Indonesia officially became a member of BRICS on January 1, 2025.
President Prabowo Subianto attended the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, held from September 12-13, 2026. The summit addressed strategic issues including the reform of multilateral institutions and transaction mechanisms using local currencies. The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs stated that President Prabowo was accompanied by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, along with several other ministers and economic officials. India held the presidency of BRICS for the year 2026, with the summit themed "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." President Prabowo was scheduled to present the Indonesian government's views in two main sessions. The first was a closed session for BRICS member countries, focusing on "Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism." The second session brought together BRICS members and partner countries to discuss "inclusive global growth, innovation, resilience, and sustainability." According to the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, economic agendas on the table included reforms of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank, financial cooperation, Local Currency Settlement (LCS) mechanisms, strengthening global supply chains, and open, inclusive, transparent, and rules-based trading systems. Other topics covered energy, food security, agriculture, digitization, technology, climate change, as well as peace and security. Indonesia officially became a member of BRICS on January 1, 2025. The forum now represents approximately 49.5 percent of the world's population, 40 percent of global GDP, and 26 percent of world trade value. Accompanying President Prabowo were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Investment and Industrialization, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, the Cabinet Secretary, the Governor of Bank Indonesia, and the Deputy Minister of Finance. The Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry also attended with representatives from the business community.
