SIM Card Registration Act Needs Amendments, PNP Cites Ongoing Cybercrime Links

The Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) has pushed for amendments to the SIM Card Registration Act, stating that despite its passage, almost all recent cybercrime cases in the country still involve subscriber identity modules (SIM) cards. PNP-ACG director Maj. Gen. Wilson Casil Asueta made the suggestion during a press briefing on Tuesday. According to Asueta, the law was enacted to prevent criminals from purchasing SIM cards anonymously and to facilitate the tracking of cybercriminals. However, its effectiveness appears to be limited. Law enforcement agencies point out that loopholes in the SIM Card Registration Act and the discrepancy between registered information and actual users make it difficult to eradicate cybercrimes. Cybercrimes exploiting SIM cards, such as phishing scams, romance scams, and online extortion, continue to plague the Philippines. These offenses not only cause financial losses to individuals but also undermine public trust in digital security. The PNP-ACG is reportedly seeking amendments that could include the introduction of stricter identity verification procedures and enhanced management of the registered information database.
