Online Scam Hub Raided in Cambodia's Svay Rieng, 8 Suspects Arrested

In Svay Rieng province, southeastern Cambodia, an operation was conducted to investigate and crack down on a suspected online scam hub. This action was taken following directives from the Director-General of National Police and the Governor of Svay Rieng Province regarding a campaign to combat online fraud. On July 26, 2024, led by Major General Keo Sotha, Deputy Police Commissioner of Svay Rieng Province, a specialized police force, in cooperation with the Bavet City Police Inspectorate and with the coordination of Deputy Prosecutor Dora Ang Prothean of the Provincial Court, conducted an investigation and raid on a suspected location of online fraud. The operation targeted a rented villa in Bavet Kandal village, Bavet city. During the operation, eight suspects, including three women, all identified as Vietnamese nationals, were arrested on suspicion of involvement in online fraud. Seized evidence included all-in-one desktop computers, mobile phones, and other related equipment. The arrested suspects and the seized evidence are currently being processed by the competent authorities to be sent to the Provincial Court for legal proceedings. The location where the crime occurred has been temporarily sealed off. This bust is part of the authorities' intensified crackdown on cybercrime, particularly online scams, which have been on the rise in Cambodia. Bavet City, being a hub for border trade and economic activity, also presents complex challenges, potentially becoming a breeding ground for illicit activities.
