Vietnam, Canada Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

Vietnam and Canada have elevated their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership, ushering in a new era for their ties. This significant step, built upon more than five decades of friendship and the progress made under the Comprehensive Partnership, is anchored in eight pillars. These pillars are designed to address shared challenges, seize emerging opportunities, and contribute to a more secure, prosperous, and dynamic Indo-Pacific region. General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam described Canada as a friend and a trusted partner with which Vietnam shares many common interests and strategic perspectives. The visit is expected to open a new chapter in Vietnam-Canada relations, reflecting a new level of political trust, increasingly close alignment of interests and visions, and the determination of both countries to build a long-term, stable, and substantive relationship that serves as a model of cooperation between two nations on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean. Cooperation between the legislative bodies of both countries is also anticipated to develop in a more substantive and effective manner moving forward. Strengthening delegation exchanges and contacts among parliamentarians, specialized committees, women parliamentarians, and young parliamentarians is deemed crucial, along with promoting the sharing of experiences in legislation and oversight. The establishment of this Strategic Partnership underscores Vietnam's emphasis on diversifying and balancing its diplomatic strategy in response to an increasingly complex and uncertain global landscape. President To Lam expressed his belief that Vietnam-Canada relations will remain firmly grounded in mutual trust, broaden through shared interests, and continually move toward a brighter future.
