Hanoi Metro Serves Over 14 Million Passengers in Two Years, Boosting Urban Development Hopes

The elevated section of Hanoi's metro, running from Nhon to Cau Giay, has served approximately 14.2 million passengers in the two years since its operation began. The section, which opened on December 30, 2023, initially covers about 8.5 kilometers between Nhon and Cau Giay stations. This ridership reflects the growing role of public transportation in Hanoi, aligning with the city's urban redevelopment plans. Further increases in passenger numbers are anticipated in 2026, which is expected to stimulate real estate development and commercial activities along the metro line. Vietnam is accelerating the development of its urban railway networks, particularly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. In Hanoi, the Nhon-Cau Giay section is part of a larger 12.5-kilometer line connecting Nhon to Hanoi Station, with the elevated portion opening first. The full completion of the line, including underground segments, is expected to significantly improve access to the city center and alleviate traffic congestion. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is progressing with multiple metro and urban railway projects. Initiatives such as installing covered walkways to connect buses and metros, and collaborative research on system integration, operation, and maintenance, are underway to enhance the overall transportation network. These infrastructure investments are crucial for supporting Vietnam's rapid economic growth and urbanization.
