Siem Reap Targets 10,000 for Angkor Equinox Run to Boost Green Season Tourism
Siem Reap province is gearing up for the 'Equinox Angkor Run' on September 21, aiming to attract 5,000 to 10,000 participants. The event seeks to boost tourism and business activity during Cambodia's Green Season by combining a mass run with the unique sunrise phenomenon at Angkor Wat.
SIEM REAP, Sept 1, 2026 (KPT) — Siem Reap province is preparing to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 participants to a new running event timed with the September Angkor Equinox, as authorities seek to boost tourism and business activity during Cambodia’s Green Season, officials said Tuesday. The “Equinox Angkor Run” is scheduled to begin at 4:30 a.m. on September 21, starting from the Preah Reach Damnak Stone Bridge and heading toward the Angkor Archaeological Park, according to the provincial administration. Deputy Governor Ngov Sengkak chaired a preparatory meeting on August 28 to coordinate arrangements for the event, which will combine a mass run with the rare sunrise phenomenon at Angkor Wat. Participants will register online and receive free shirts, caps and race bibs. Visitors will also be invited to make voluntary donations, with funds supporting humanitarian and community projects. Officials said the event is designed to go beyond a conventional sporting competition by combining sport, health, tourism, culture and charity. The Angkor Equinox has already proven its appeal. More than 74,000 domestic and international tourists visited the park from March 21–23 this year to witness the spring equinox, including 30,000 on March 22 alone. The phenomenon occurs twice annually, when the rising sun aligns directly above Angkor Wat’s central tower, showcasing the astronomical and architectural sophistication of the ancient Khmer temple complex. Authorities said the September run is expected to generate additional activity for hotels, restaurants, transport providers, tour guides and community businesses, while strengthening Siem Reap’s position as a destination for cultural, heritage and sports tourism. Agencies have been instructed to ensure security, public order, traffic management, sanitation and healthcare services, alongside a wider media campaign to encourage participation and promote Siem Reap globally.
