Prabowo Signals Potential Candidate for Bank Indonesia Governor

President Prabowo Subianto has signaled a potential candidate for the governorship of Bank Indonesia (BI). The position was recently vacated by Perry Warjiyo, who resigned for personal reasons on July 25, 2026. Prabowo conveyed his thoughts on a successor in a speech during the mass ceremony for 62,000 subsidized housing units, broadcast via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel. Initially, Minister of Housing and Settlements Maruarar Sirait stated that Destry Damayanti was still the Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), but Prabowo corrected him, noting that Destry is currently serving as the Acting Governor of BI following Perry Warjiyo's resignation. "The Minister of Housing was mistaken earlier. No, Mrs. Destry is now the Acting Governor, PGS, the abbreviation for acting governor. So she is acting," Prabowo stated in his speech on Thursday (July 30, 2026). Following this, Prabowo inquired about Destry's prospects for continuing as the definitive Governor of BI. He asked if she was fit for the role, stating that the decision would ultimately be up to the parliament. "How does it seem? Is it okay? It's up to the parliament later, roughly," Prabowo remarked. On the same occasion, Prabowo emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government, Bank Indonesia (BI), and all state-owned banks (Himbara). According to him, all these elements form a single unit within the national financial sector. "Yes, all Himbara banks now, together with Bank Indonesia, together with all elements, we must become one team, one squad. The key is cooperation," Prabowo explained. Prabowo expressed confidence that if Bank Indonesia and Himbara can synergize, Indonesia's financial sector can develop rapidly and achieve great things. "With cooperation, with mutual trust, with mutual support, with mutual filling of gaps, with mutual strengthening, we will achieve great things. We are now, all of us, all are children of Indonesia. We are all in one, in one big family, in one big ship called NKRI," Prabowo asserted. BI has experienced changes in its top leadership structure after Perry Warjiyo resigned as Governor.
