Laos Focuses on International Cooperation and Domestic Issues: Agriculture Development with FAO, UXO Clearance at UN, Financial Cooperation with Hong Kong

The Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) is accelerating efforts towards sustainable domestic development while deepening cooperation with the international community. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Lao government have launched the development of a new Country Programming Framework (CPF) for 2027–2031, which will guide cooperation on agriculture, rural development, and environmental sustainability. In addition, the Permanent Mission of the Lao PDR to the United Nations, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hosted a high-level side event on July 16, 2026, at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event's theme was "National Sustainable Development Goals: UXO Clearance and the International Legal Framework to Accelerate Implementation of the 2030 Agenda." This highlights the importance of addressing Laos' long-standing unexploded ordnance (UXO) issue and establishing an international framework to achieve sustainable development goals. In the economic sphere, Laos and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation in financial services and support the development of a modern, transparent, and internationally integrated gold market. This indicates the internationalization of Laos' financial market and expectations for potential economic growth. Domestically, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone visited Phanam Subdistrict in Mahaxay District, Khammouane Province, on July 20, 2026. He reviewed local development and provided policy guidance. This demonstrates the central government's direct involvement in local development to promote economic growth. Furthermore, a ceremony marking the 71st anniversary of the Lao Women’s Union was held on July 17 at the Traditional Lao Silk House in Vientiane Capital. The ceremony highlighted the contributions of Lao women to national liberation, development, and cultural preservation, reaffirming the significant role of women in Lao society. These developments underscore Laos' focus on international collaboration and its multifaceted approach to economic development, infrastructure improvement, and social issue resolution. Particularly, with the significant influence of relations with China and Vietnam on Laos' foreign and economic policies, these international cooperation initiatives hold the potential to strengthen Laos' strategic position.
