Remembering Pat Walsh: The Journalist Who Bridged Indonesia and East Timor

This article reflects on the significant contributions of the late Pat Walsh, a key figure in the development of "Inside Indonesia" magazine, by Gerry van Klinken, a former editor. Walsh, a progressive activist in Australia, served as the founder and editor of "Inside Indonesia," acting as a crucial bridge for fostering mutual understanding between Indonesia and East Timor through its reporting. Particularly at a time when many Australians were indifferent to the East Timor issue, supported the Indonesian government's stance, or considered the annexation a fait accompli, Walsh consistently conveyed the plight of the East Timorese people from a progressive perspective. Van Klinken recounts that his first connection with Walsh was through an article he contributed to "Inside Indonesia" about his visit to East Timor in 1989. Later, in 1996, he was invited by Walsh to become the magazine's editor, an experience that made him part of a diverse community and profoundly influenced his life. Furthermore, Walsh was deeply involved in the East Timorese Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CAVR) established in 2002 and invited van Klinken to support its activities. This experience was a turning point for van Klinken, allowing him to understand the tragedies of war not just as printed accounts but as real stories of human lives and deaths.
