A total of 10 underground hospitals have been completed across Myanmar, Dr. Shwe Pon, the National Unity Government’s (NUG) Union Minister of Health, told Mizzima in an interview. Construction of the underground hospitals began in 2024 under then-Union Minister of Health Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, funded by international donations. “To date, a total of 10 underground hospitals have been completed nationwide. Some are already operational, while others are undergoing final touches and being equipped with necessary medical supplies,” Dr. Shwe Pon said. The completed total marks an increase from June 2025, when Nay Phone Latt, spokesperson for the NUG Prime Minister’s Office, told Mizzima the NUG was targeting eight bomb-proof underground hospitals in NUG-controlled areas, with two then under construction. The NUG says the hospitals are intended to guarantee secure healthcare access, saying the military junta intentionally targets not only schools but also hospitals and clinics. According to a 5 July report by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), junta violence killed 67 civilians in June — 28 women and 39 men, including nine children under 18 — of whom 46 died in airstrikes specifically. AAPP said it is separately working to verify an additional list of 88 people reported killed in aerial attacks during the same period, which has not yet been confirmed.
