TD Luis weakens after Isabela landfall, may become LPA Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Luis is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area (LPA) by Tuesday after making landfall in Isabela, although it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring heavy rains over parts of Luzon, the state weather bureau said Monday evening. In its 8 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, PAGASA reported that Luis made landfall near San Mateo, Isabela. Its maximum sustained winds were at 55 kilometers per hour (kph) with gusts of up to 70 kph. Luis was moving west at 20 kph and was forecast to cross northern Luzon by Tuesday morning before moving over the West Philippine Sea. It is expected to weaken into an LPA by Tuesday. Heavy to intense rainfall is expected over Isabela, Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan, Zambales, Bulacan, Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Abra, Ilocos Sur, and Ilocos Norte due to Luis. Flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible in these areas. Meanwhile, intermittent rains will prevail over the western part of Luzon, Mindoro Island, Palawan, parts of the Visayas, and western Mindanao due to the enhanced southwest monsoon.
