Yangon, July 13 Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported today, July 13, citing ASEAN sources, that terrorist Min Aung Hlaing is scheduled to visit Thailand in early August. This will be the second official visit to an ASEAN member state since Min Aung Hlaing took office as the illegitimate president, backed by the military, in April. Earlier this month, Min Aung Hlaing made an official visit to Laos, which was his first official visit to an ASEAN member state since taking office as the illegitimate president. ASEAN sources have not yet disclosed the detailed itinerary or the exact dates of Min Aung Hlaing's visit to Thailand. Thailand is also a key ASEAN member state that has been striving to re-engage Myanmar with ASEAN, from a situation where Myanmar's military leaders have been excluded from ASEAN summits since the February 1, 2021, military coup. In October 2021, ASEAN decided not to allow the then-military leader Min Aung Hlaing to attend ASEAN summits due to a lack of progress in implementing the Five-Point Consensus of ASEAN, including the immediate cessation of hostilities. Yesterday, July 12, ASEAN foreign ministers, including Myanmar's military regime's Foreign Minister Than Swe, held an informal meeting in Bangkok, where Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai urged Myanmar to show practical actions to implement the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. Outside of the meeting, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and Myanmar's military regime's Foreign Minister Than Swe met separately and reaffirmed the close relations between the two neighboring countries, according to a statement from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is understood that the discussions between the two sides focused on border security, trade, and the current situation in Myanmar. Min Aung Hlaing had previously visited Thailand in April 2025 to attend the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit held in Bangkok. This visit in early August will also be Min Aung Hlaing's first return visit to Thailand since April 2025.
