US Pacific Fleet Commander Visits Cambodia to Strengthen Military Ties and Bilateral Security

Admiral Steve Koehler, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, visited Cambodia to discuss methods by which the United States can support the strengthening of military relations with Cambodia, according to an announcement by the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia on its official Facebook page. The U.S. Embassy did not provide details on the exact dates of Admiral Koehler's arrival in Cambodia or the duration of his visit. It also did not specify any activities or meetings he had with the Cambodian government. In a post released on the morning of August 7, the U.S. Embassy stated: "The United States and Cambodia are working together to further strengthen our relationship, which supports regional security, enhances cooperation between the armed forces of both countries, and contributes to a more secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region." Recently, the U.S. Embassy also announced that in late July, the United States brought law enforcement experts to train nearly 200 high-ranking officials in Siem Reap province. The training covered identifying human trafficking cases, interviewing techniques for suspects and victims, detecting forged identities, ensuring the safety of officials, and responding to threats involving knives and other weapons. The U.S. expects that by equipping Cambodian officials with these skills, they can better detect forgery, disrupt transnational criminal networks, and protect vulnerable individuals, thereby enhancing the security of both Cambodia and the United States. It is worth recalling that in late January 2026, Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, visited Cambodia and held discussions with the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Defense. At that time, a U.S. Navy vessel also docked at the Ream Naval Base for the first time. This event was noted as a positive sign for bilateral relations between Cambodia and the United States after years of decline. Following numerous high-level and military-to-military meetings, Cambodia and the United States have agreed to resume the "Angkor Guardian" exercise in 2027, after an interruption of nearly 10 years since 2017.
