Philippines warns China may reassert itself amid US-South Korea drill cuts

The Philippines has warned that China may use the reduction in the scale of joint US-South Korea military exercises as an opportunity to reassert its influence in the Asia-Pacific region. He added that the US has assured him that its commitment to the Philippines remains unchanged despite the reduction in the scale of military exercises. He accused China of exploiting democratic systems and spreading disinformation. Last month, joint US-South Korea military exercises were shortened and some drills were canceled at the order of US President Donald Trump. These military exercises had to conclude six days earlier than originally scheduled. Donald Trump cited his good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a reason, and also linked it to South Korea's refusal to participate in the war in Iran. While the South Korean presidential office stated that it is considering assisting the US in its maritime freedom of navigation operations in the Strait of Hormuz, no concrete decision has been made yet. Donald Trump said he was planning to meet Kim Jong Un within this year, but Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister, denied the statement. The US, South Korea, and Japan have begun a five-day trilateral military exercise near Jeju Island starting Monday. The military exercise, named "Freedom Edge," is a defensive drill aimed at deterring North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, according to the South Korean military. North Korea has strongly criticized the military exercise, accusing it of being a US plot to encircle Russia and China.
