Taiwan condemns China’s ‘wolf warrior’ behaviour at Pacific forum

At the Pacific Islands Forum held this week, Taiwan's Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, strongly condemned China's diplomatic practices and "wolf warrior" behavior. China strongly objected to Taiwan's participation in this year's Pacific Islands Forum, threatening that Taiwan was not qualified to attend and that Taiwan's attendance could lead to "adverse consequences." Palau, which hosted this summit, is one of the three Pacific island nations that have established formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Lin Chia-lung told reporters on September 4 that China's statements at the summit were unwelcome and undermined the unity of the Pacific region. "China's 'wolf warrior diplomacy' undermines the unity of the Pacific region and everyone is disgusted by it," he said, adding that both Taiwan and China were merely invited guests. He criticized that China, disregarding the host country's wishes, tried to be the host itself, and its declaration of Palau as an "unsafe travel destination" with threats of severe "adverse consequences" was utterly ridiculous. He also revealed some findings regarding the activities of Chinese officials during the summit. He further stated that he was grateful to the Palauan government for significantly enhancing the security of the Taiwanese delegation, as Chinese Communist Party-dispatched police officers and plainclothes spies were found to be deployed almost everywhere the conference was held. Lin Chia-lung confidently stated that the more China displays such domineering behavior, including its missile tests in the Pacific region in July, the more support Taiwan will gain.
