Hanoi Residents Battle Flooded Streets After Heavy Overnight Rain

Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, is grappling with widespread flooding across major roads and residential areas after experiencing over 150mm of rain overnight, causing significant disruption to daily life. Cau Dien Street, part of National Highway 32, saw water depths of nearly half a meter, paralyzing traffic in both directions, particularly around the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line construction site. Many vehicles stalled, forcing residents to push their motorbikes through the water. Residents in flooded areas have erected barriers nearly a meter high to protect their homes. Thuy Nga, a shopkeeper in Tay Tuu Ward, stated, "I had to put ceramic tiles across my doorway to stop the waves from surging in and washing my things away." In the Cau Coc Street area of Tay Mo Ward, water levels reached nearly a meter, spilling into homes. This area, located in the Nhue River basin, frequently experiences severe flooding due to an incomplete and disconnected drainage system. Authorities have cordoned off flooded sections with warning tape, and many street-front businesses have closed their doors. Some residents were seen using boats or foam boxes to navigate the deeply submerged streets. Hanoi has seen rapid population growth alongside its fast economic development and urbanization. This has amplified the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades, especially in drainage systems, which the recent downpour has highlighted as lagging behind. The Vietnamese government has pledged to accelerate infrastructure investment to address increasing extreme weather events linked to climate change. However, this incident underscores the necessity for more immediate and comprehensive measures to ensure residents' safety and well-being.
