Top NPA Commander Killed in Albay Clash

A senior New People’s Army (NPA) leader was killed in an encounter with government troops in Camalig, Albay province, on Monday night. According to Army Lt. Col. Cliff Chester L. de Ocampo, the slain rebel leader was identified as the commanding officer of the Regional Special Operations Group of the Bicol Regional Party Committee. The operation was conducted by soldiers from the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, based on intelligence reports. During the encounter, soldiers were fired upon by an NPA unit. The government troops responded accordingly, resulting in a firefight. As a result of the clash, one NPA leader was killed, and government troops recovered firearms and explosives from the encounter site. Rebel documents and personal belongings were also seized. This incident is part of the ongoing security operations by the Philippine government against insurgent groups, particularly the NPA, which is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, established in 1969. The group has been engaged in an armed struggle against the government for decades.
