11 Illegal Workers Arrested in Pattaya Crackdown

A CRACKDOWN on illegal employment at Pattaya’s Walking Street led to the arrest of 11 foreigners working here without permits, TV Channel 7 said this afternoon (July 19). Mr. Sekasit Sawanyathipati, deputy director-general of the Labour Ministry’s Department of Employment and head of the Centre for the Prevention and Suppression of Illegal Labour, led a police team in inspecting various establishments on Walking Street, primarily serving South Asian clients. Initially, 81 migrant workers were rounded up at these establishments: 53 from Myanmar, 23 from India, 4 from Uzbekistan, and one from Pakistan. However, upon checking work permits, 11 were found to be working here illegally. Of these, seven are from India and four from Myanmar. The police team collected the evidence and handed the case over to Pattaya City police station for legal proceedings. Extension of grace period for migrant workers from 3 countries In another development, Capt. Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said the cabinet has approved extending the grace period for foreign workers from three countries, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, to temporarily stay and continue working in Thailand till December 11, 2027. Previously, their permits were set to expire gradually towards the end of this year. The aim is to maintain economic stability and alleviate labour shortage. She emphasised that this is not a general opening for new worker registration, but rather an extension of the grace period only for the existing group whose details are already in the system.
