Online Scam Hub Raided in Sihanoukville, 37 Detained

In the southern Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville, authorities have raided a villa suspected to be an online scam operation, detaining over 30 individuals. The operation was carried out under the direct command of Mr. Mang Sineth, Governor of Sihanoukville and Chairman of the Provincial Administrative Command, with procedural coordination from the Provincial Court Prosecutor. On August 31st, an administrative inspection was conducted at a villa located in Village 5, Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville City. As a result, a total of 37 individuals were detained, including 2 Cambodians (1 female), 34 Chinese nationals (1 female, 23 of whom lacked proper documentation), and 1 Myanmar national (lacking proper documentation). Seized evidence includes five All-In-One computers, 110 mobile phones, and one vehicle. Currently, the 37 suspects and the seized items have been transferred to the Sihanoukville Provincial Police Headquarters for further questioning and legal proceedings. This incident highlights increased enforcement in areas suspected of being hotbeds for online scams in Cambodia. The significant number of foreign nationals, particularly Chinese and Myanmar, among the detainees suggests potential links to international criminal organizations. Sihanoukville has seen a surge in Chinese investment in recent years, with booming casino and real estate development, but concerns have also been raised about its use as a cover for illicit activities.
