Champasak Province Reopens Eco-Tourism Sites to Boost Local Economy

Champasak Province in southern Laos is preparing to reopen renowned natural beauty spots, notably the Khon Phasoy and Tad Pha Suam attractions, as part of initiatives to revitalize the local economy and secure sustainable livelihoods for residents. Alongside these reopenings, a major marathon is being elevated to international standard to further boost tourism. Mr Alounxay Sounnalath, Party Secretary of Champasak Province, recently met with Mr Inthy Deuansavanh, President of the Lao Tourism Business Association. Their discussion centered on reviewing 25 core indicators aimed at resolving outstanding tourism challenges. These indicators have been formally endorsed by the Provincial People's Council as a priority provincial agenda. The primary objective is to fast-track stalled tourism development projects, ensuring they resume operations swiftly in alignment with sustainable green tourism guidelines. This public-private partnership marks a significant milestone in upgrading Champasak's tourism standards to attract both domestic and international holidaymakers, while actively working to alleviate local poverty. Laos welcomed more than 2.1 million international visitors during the first five months of 2026, achieving 47 percent of the annual target of 4.46 million arrivals and marking an 8 percent increase compared with the same period last year, according to a government report presented to the First Extraordinary Session of the 10th National Assembly on July 6. As global tourism increasingly shifts toward sustainability, Tham Non–Tham Nang Fa in Vangvieng, Vientiane Province, has emerged as a model of eco-tourism that combines natural conservation, environmental protection and community-based development. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has launched a 10-year master plan aimed at guiding sustainable tourism development in Nakhasang, Don Det, Don Khon and surrounding areas in Khong District, Champasak Province. Kaeng Xe Lanong in Salavan Province has officially opened to visitors ahead of the Lao New Year (Boun Pi Mai) BE 2569 celebrations, offering a natural retreat for holiday travelers. Malaysia is strengthening its tourism ties with Laos through a vibrant and forward-looking industry event held in Vientiane. In collaboration with the Embassy of Malaysia in Vientiane, Tourism Malaysia successfully organised the “Surreal Experiences from City Lights to Island Paradise, Malaysia Has It All” Seminar, B2B Session and Networking Dinner 2026 at Souphattra Hotel.
