Cambodian Hapkido Athletes Compete in Asian Championship at Personal Expense Amidst Funding Challenges

The Cambodian Hapkido delegation is set to compete in the 3rd Asian Championship in Hong Kong, China, from August 13-17. Over 90% of the delegation's travel expenses are being personally funded by the athletes, with only minimal support and encouragement from the Cambodian Hapkido Federation, according to Acting President Kuoch Hong Cheak. During a motivational meeting and press conference held on the evening of August 6 at the federation's headquarters in the National Olympic Stadium, President Hong Cheak expressed his profound emotion, stating, "I am deeply moved by the athletes' dedication." The delegation, comprising 14 athletes, 2 coaches, and 1 official, is overcoming difficulties and financial shortages, investing their own resources to compete for national medals. While previous international competitions received significant financial support from the federation, the athletes' strenuous training and personal financial contributions in 2026 are particularly noteworthy. President Hong Cheak emphasized, "With such determination, I believe they will not retreat but will only move forward, and the federation will grow stronger with each generation due to the struggle and personal sacrifice of the athletes." He highlighted that while federation leaders typically cover expenses for athletes participating in international events, this time the athletes are bearing the costs themselves. On behalf of the federation, they are confident that based on the achievements of winning gold, silver, and bronze medals in the past two international competitions, as well as the commitment to compete in the Asian Championship in China this August, the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport will provide incentives to the athletes who strive to win medals for the nation. They also anticipate further support from other sponsors in the future.
