Bavet City Authorities Bust Suspected Online Scam Operations, Detain 9 Foreigners

In Bavet City, southeastern Cambodia, near the Vietnamese border, authorities conducted administrative inspections and raids on four locations suspected of involvement in online scams on August 4th. The operation was led by the unified command headquarters of Bavet City and Kandal Province, with the coordination of the provincial prosecutor's office and the participation of police and armed forces. The operation was directly supervised by Mr. Ret Raksa, Deputy Governor of Bavet City, and Mr. Men Eng, Deputy Governor of Kandal Province, with procedural coordination from Mr. Kham Sophary, Prosecutor, and Mr. Dora Ang Prath, Deputy Prosecutor. The inspections targeted three locations for open administration and one location suspected of being an online scam hub. As a result of the inspections at the four locations, a total of 46 foreigners were examined, including 37 Vietnamese nationals (7 women) and 9 Chinese nationals (4 women). Among these foreigners, nine Vietnamese nationals (one woman) at the fourth location were detained on suspicion of involvement in online scams. A number of exhibits were seized, including personal mobile phones, various mobile phones, laptops, and SIM cards. The other foreigners were found to possess valid passports and legal residency. Currently, the suspects and the seized evidence have been transferred to the Provincial Police Commissioner's Office for further legal proceedings.
