Cambodia to Reduce Traffic Accidents with Solar Streetlight Installation
Cambodia aims to reduce traffic accidents by installing solar-powered streetlights on national and major roads. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Ministry of Mines and Energy will collaborate on this initiative, prioritizing high-traffic and accident-prone areas.
H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, has emphasized that the installation of streetlights along national and major roads offers significant benefits to citizens and road users, contributing to the reduction of traffic accidents. He made these remarks on July 14, as he and H.E. Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy, presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation for the installation of solar-powered streetlight systems along national roads, public roads, and roads within municipalities. H.E. Peng Ponea stated, "The installation of streetlights is very important for citizens and road users. Specifically, installing solar streetlights on busy roads such as National Road 5, National Road 6, roads with many traffic accidents, densely populated areas, rural roads, in front of hospitals and schools, and around markets, is crucial, and most importantly, it will help reduce traffic accidents." The Minister further added that studies by international road institutes have indicated that adequate lighting on national and major roads can help reduce traffic accidents by approximately 20% to 30%. Therefore, the installation of solar-powered streetlight systems along national roads and public roads is expected to contribute significantly to accident reduction.
