Hanoi Hit by Heavy Overnight Rains, Widespread Flooding Disrupts Traffic

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, was hit by widespread and severe flooding following record-breaking heavy rains from the night of September 16th to the early morning of the 17th. Many major roads, including Tran Cung and Nguyen Khuyen streets, were submerged with water depths ranging from 10cm to 40cm, causing significant traffic disruption, especially during the early morning commute. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, areas in the Northern region, particularly Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An provinces, recorded over 100mm of rainfall, with some areas experiencing exceptional precipitation. For instance, Cau Giay district in Hanoi recorded 133mm, Hai Ba Trung district 183mm, and Phu Do district 167mm. The heavy rainfall highlights challenges in urban infrastructure development within Vietnam's one-party system. Rapid urbanization driven by economic growth appears to have outpaced the development of drainage systems capable of handling such extreme rainfall events. Socially, residents shared flooding information on social media, struggling to find alternative transportation. Meteorological authorities have forecast continued moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms for Hanoi and surrounding areas on September 17th, urging vigilance against further flooding.
