Hanoi's Infrastructure Projects Cause Dust and Mud, Disrupting Daily Life

For several months, many major roads in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, have been plagued by severe dust and mud. "Dust storms" rise with the wind, and roads turn into "mud swamps" during rainfall, leaving commuters and roadside shopkeepers exhausted. Even after construction is completed, the problems persist. On roads like Le Duan, Nguyen Trai, and Vo Chi Cong, newly paved asphalt surfaces exhibit unevenness and significant height differences in places. These patched and uneven areas pose risks of vehicles unexpectedly scraping their undersides. On June 18, it was reported that Quang Trung Street would undergo re-paving due to failing to meet standards. This has plunged the street, located in the heart of the capital, back into a cycle of dust during dry spells and mud during the rainy season. While authorities cite adverse weather and the movement of material transport trucks as causes, this explanation lacks conviction. Contractors should proactively ensure project quality and avoid disrupting public life and construction schedules, rather than blaming their own vehicles. Under Vietnam's one-party system, infrastructure development is a key policy for driving economic growth, with modernization of urban functions being urgent, especially in large cities like Hanoi. However, cases like this, where environmental issues and impacts on daily life during the development process become evident as public dissatisfaction, are not uncommon. Vietnam's economy, closely tied to China, has achieved remarkable growth in recent years, but quality control and consideration for residents' lives in domestic infrastructure development will continue to be critical issues for sustainable growth.
