Three Vietnamese Airports Among Asia-Pacific Leaders in Air Connectivity Improvement

Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, and Da Nang airports in Vietnam have been recognized for significant improvements in air connectivity in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region for 2025, according to the 2025 Air Connectivity Index report released by the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific and Middle East on September 7. Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi and Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City were noted for outstanding improvements in the segment of airports serving 25-40 million passengers annually. Da Nang Airport was ranked among the leaders in the 5-15 million passenger segment. The inclusion of three major Vietnamese airports in this group highlights their increasing role as gateways in the regional network, connecting major domestic economic and tourist centers with numerous international destinations, as stated by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). The ACI Air Connectivity Index is developed based on network size, frequency, and the economic importance of destinations, while also assessing connectivity quality through aircraft types, domestic/international routes, transit stopovers, and airline alliance participation. The report indicates that air connectivity in the Asia-Pacific region increased by 10% in 2025, a slowdown from the 14% growth in 2024, reflecting a shift from strong post-pandemic recovery to stable growth. Of the 315 airports assessed, 74% saw increased connectivity in 2025. Hub airports continued to lead growth, with 83-97% of major airports recording increases, driven by expanded airline networks and sustained international travel demand. Intra-regional passenger traffic in Asia-Pacific accounted for 91% of total departing passengers in 2025, a 5% increase from 2024. Intercontinental traffic originating from the region rose by 7%. In Vietnam, the growing demand for international connectivity also necessitates long-term enhancements in airport capacity and operational quality. The Long Thanh International Airport is expected to commence operations by the end of 2026.
