Cambodian Households Use Garlic as Traditional Pest Repellent for Rice

In Cambodian households, garlic is traditionally used to preserve the freshness of rice and reduce pest infestation. This age-old wisdom is believed to aid in rice storage, particularly in Cambodia's hot and humid climate. The strong aroma of garlic is thought to deter small insects and common rice pests, preventing them from entering the rice container. Garlic also contains certain natural compounds with antimicrobial properties, though the effectiveness of this method can vary depending on storage conditions. To try this method, one can place well-dried garlic, free from mold or spoilage, into a rice container and seal it tightly. The container should be kept in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. The garlic can be replaced approximately every 2–3 months. Besides garlic, some households also use black pepper or dried chilies as traditional methods to help reduce pests in rice. However, using garlic cannot replace proper rice storage methods. The most crucial aspects are using a clean, dry, and sealed container, keeping rice away from moisture, and regularly inspecting the rice. If rice is infested with pests but shows no strange odors, mold, or discoloration, some people use the method of placing it in the refrigerator for a few days to eliminate the pests. But if the rice has mold, a foul smell, or is clearly spoiled, it should be discarded and not consumed.
