Sri Lanka Opens Honorary Consulate in Cambodia to Boost Bilateral Friendship

An honorary consulate of Sri Lanka has been newly established in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, marking a new step in the diplomatic relations between the two countries. This development signifies a change from the previous arrangement where the Sri Lankan Embassy was located in Bangkok, Thailand. The official inauguration ceremony for the honorary consulate took place on August 5, 2026, attended by Mr. Un Khieng, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia, and Her Excellency Edirisinghe Arachchilage Sriyani Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Cambodia, along with several other high-ranking officials from the Cambodian government. During the ceremony, Mr. Pily WONG, the newly appointed Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Cambodia, was welcomed. Mr. Un Khieng emphasized the importance of promoting friendship and bilateral relations between Cambodia and Sri Lanka, stating that the establishment of the Sri Lankan honorary consulate represents a new phase in further strengthening these ties. He added that the honorary consulate is expected to serve as an effective bridge for enhancing economic cooperation, facilitating business and tourism, promoting exchanges between the peoples of the two nations, and providing consular support to their citizens. According to remarks made by the Secretary of State, the foreign ministries of both countries are currently discussing to find a suitable time to organize the first bilateral consultation at the earliest possible opportunity. Cambodia and Sri Lanka established formal diplomatic relations in 1952 and have maintained these relations on a good level until the present. However, neither country has established a resident embassy in the other; Sri Lanka's embassy accredited to Cambodia is based in Bangkok, Thailand, while Cambodia's embassy accredited to Sri Lanka is located in New Delhi, India.
