Senators Willing to Work Saturdays Amid Impeachment Trial, Budget Deliberations

Senate President Win Gatchalian admitted that work in the Senate has become "more challenging" due to the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte and the looming budget deliberations. Gatchalian explained that in addition to the timely approval of the budget, 50 Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) bills, and priority measures submitted by senators, the impeachment trial is also a significant undertaking. However, Gatchalian stated that he has discussed the matter with his fellow senators, who are "ready to sacrifice." He revealed that they are even considering working on Fridays and Saturdays. Finance Committee Chair JV Ejercito is among those who expressed willingness to extend workdays. The Senate is looking into reserving Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for hearings and technical working group meetings. The impeachment trial consumes a large portion of the day, averaging four to six hours. Initially projected to last six to seven months, the trial duration is now estimated to extend to 14 to 16 months, nearly a year and a half, as some witnesses require more than one day each. The Senate is also contemplating a change in the impeachment trial schedule. The initial agreement was for the prosecution to present all their witnesses and evidence for each article of impeachment before the defense delivers their response. However, a proposal is being considered to allow the defense to present their case right after each article is presented, potentially helping to identify redundant witnesses. A total of 92 trial days have been allotted for the impeachment proceedings, with only 10 days completed as of writing. Budget deliberations typically begin in August and conclude with the passage of the budget before the end of the year. The remaining approximately 82 trial days are likely to overlap with budget deliberations.
