Income Tax Exemption Hike Won't Silence Workers' Grievances, TUCP Says

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has maintained that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s support for a higher range of income tax exemptions would not stop workers from airing their grievances. The union specifically pointed out that proposed legislated wage hikes were not discussed, which is a major point of contention. In a statement released on Tuesday, the TUCP said that while an increase in income tax exemptions might offer some relief to certain segments of the workforce, it does not address the more pressing issues of the rising cost of living and low wages. Workers are grappling with increasing inflation and the escalating prices of essential goods, making a wage increase an immediate priority. The prevailing sentiment within the union is that a mere reduction in income tax will not translate to a significant improvement in their financial situations. Remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) form a crucial component of the Philippine economy, with a large number of citizens employed abroad. Domestically, however, workers are also advocating for a more equitable wage structure to sustain and enhance their living standards. President Marcos Jr.'s acknowledgment of income tax reduction was anticipated to be a catalyst for addressing wage disparities and recognizing the vital role of labor in the national economy. Nevertheless, the omission of wage hike discussions from the agenda has led to disappointment among the labor sector. While the South China Sea situation and the pursuit of economic growth remain prominent, there are growing concerns that the plight of domestic workers facing economic challenges is not receiving adequate attention. The TUCP is calling on the government to expedite deliberations on tangible wage increase policies that will directly contribute to the betterment of workers' lives.
