Three Sarus Crane Nests Found in Cambodia's Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary Early in Breeding Season

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – July 27, 2026 NatureLife Cambodia announced on July 27, 2026, that its field teams have discovered three Sarus Crane nests within the Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary as of July. The breeding season is expected to conclude in October, and further nest discoveries are anticipated. The research, funded by a REDD+ project, prioritizes the protection and monitoring of Sarus Crane habitats within the Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary. Nest discoveries have seen an increase over the past three years, reflecting the effectiveness of the REDD+ project and the collaborative conservation efforts between the organization, wildlife officials, and local communities. The Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary serves as a vital natural habitat, providing essential food resources and a secure environment for the Sarus Crane's breeding. The Sarus Crane, a large, flighted bird that breeds during the rainy season, is currently classified as a globally Vulnerable species facing threats of extinction. Despite challenging conditions during the early rainy season from June to July this year, including navigating through rain, crossing streams, and traversing muddy terrain by motorcycle, the biodiversity research team from NatureLife Cambodia, in close cooperation with park rangers and local communities, conducted surveys and searched for nests in key areas where Sarus Cranes have been previously sighted.
