Elderly Woman Survives Khmer Rouge Era, Receives Social Welfare Intervention in Pursat
An 86-year-old woman living alone in Pursat province, Cambodia, has received social welfare assistance after her plea for help on social media. The Ministry of Social Affairs identified her and provided food, daily necessities, and kitchenware, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the elderly, some of whom are survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime.
Mr. Ieng Hong, Director of the Department of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation of Pursat Province, led a team of specialists and collaborated with local authorities on September 3, 2026, to identify and provide social welfare services to impoverished elderly individuals living alone who had posted on social media seeking assistance. The Director confirmed the existence of elderly individuals in need of aid, as reported on social media. The beneficiary is Mrs. Sar Yan, 86 years old, residing in Ruluos Kandal village, Kampong Port commune, Krakor district, Pursat province. Mrs. Sar Yan currently lives alone. Although she has a niece with a house nearby, she prefers to live independently to maintain her peace and quiet. Her niece provides her with daily meals. However, her humble dwelling lacks kitchenware such as pots and stoves, as her advanced age prevents her from cooking. In addition to the daily food provisions from her niece, local authorities and government working groups have been providing monthly rice subsidies. Mrs. Sar Yan also possesses an "Equality Card," which grants her access to various social services from the government. During the visit, the Director conveyed the well wishes and delivered humanitarian aid from His Excellency Minister Chea Somethy and his wife.
