Illegal Plantations in Preah Vihear Protected Area Raided by Rangers

In Cambodia's northeastern Preah Vihear province, authorities have launched a crackdown on illegal plantations of rubber and cashew saplings discovered within the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary in Sambour district. Local media outlet Kampuchea Thmey Local reported that environmental officials, in collaboration with Sambour district gendarmes, conducted operations over the weekend to curb these illicit activities. The joint operation was initiated following reports that some traders had been using bulldozers to clear forest land and subsequently plant large quantities of rubber and cashew saplings. Kea Bou, Director of the Preah Vihear Provincial Department of Environment, reported that the investigation confirmed illegal planting activities at several locations within the sanctuary. Specifically, at coordinates X.574790 Y.1414917, 133 rubber saplings, believed to be only one day old, were found and removed on-site. At coordinates X.579113 Y.1415060, approximately 491 rubber saplings were found prepared for planting and were also destroyed. Furthermore, at coordinates X.578090 Y.1416639, about 33.61 hectares of land showed evidence of clearing, plowing, and new rubber saplings planted approximately five days prior. 96 saplings were removed, and the case has been forwarded to the court. At coordinates X.578447 Y.1416340, on land under dispute until 2026, 128 cashew saplings, estimated to be around 13 days old, were discovered and removed. Authorities indicated that these forest lands are being illegally occupied by wealthy and influential traders who collude to hire local residents for cultivating rubber and cashew nuts. They are reportedly continuing land clearing and plowing activities without fear of specialized authorities. One of the residents working on planting the saplings at the site stated that they were hired by a female trader who is active in clearing land in the area to plant rubber trees for resale. These illegal deforestation and planting activities pose a significant threat to the ecosystem of the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary, and authorities intend to intensify enforcement measures.
