Rare Dugong Rediscovered Off Cambodia's Kep Coast, Indicating Success of Marine Conservation Efforts
A rare dugong has been newly sighted in the protected marine area of Kep Province, Cambodia. This suggests that conservation efforts, including the deployment of artificial reefs and seagrass restoration, may be contributing to the recovery of this marine mammal's habitat.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced on the evening of July 8, 2026, that another dugong was newly sighted in the protected area of Cambodia's marine territory in Kep Province. The Ministry of Agriculture also stated that through close cooperation between the General Directorate of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC), and sub-national administrations, efforts to conserve and deploy artificial fish habitats have helped restore food sources (seagrass) which attract this rare marine mammal.
