Vietnam Accelerates Digitalization with VNPT SmartCA Digital Signature Service

Vietnam's state-owned telecommunications giant, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), is promoting the widespread adoption of digital signatures – crucial for authenticating electronic transactions and ensuring document integrity – through its 'VNPT SmartCA' service. This service allows users to apply digital signatures on internet-connected devices like smartphones, eliminating the need for specialized hardware such as USB tokens. VNPT SmartCA enables users to sign digitally directly from their phones, track transaction history, and proactively manage their signing activities. The service is currently integrated across various platforms in sectors including public services, tax, finance, banking, insurance, education, and healthcare, thereby expanding the application of digital signatures in daily life. A key feature allows citizens with a level 2 electronic identity account to register for VNPT SmartCA directly via the VNeID application. Leveraging verified identity data streamlines procedures, reduces paperwork, and facilitates broader access to digital signatures. To encourage public familiarity with electronic transactions, VNPT is offering a free 12-month subscription to its personal digital certificate for public services (PS0). This allows users to utilize VNPT SmartCA for signing documents on the National Public Service Portal and provincial public service portals within the program's scope. According to VNPT representatives, each electronic transaction, from signing public service documents to completing remote contracts, contributes to driving digital transformation. VNPT aims to build a convenient, secure, and trustworthy electronic transaction environment through its digital platform ecosystem for citizens, businesses, and management agencies. Launched in 2021, VNPT SmartCA was developed in compliance with regulations on electronic transactions and digital signature certification services in Vietnam. It represents one of VNPT's key solutions to broaden access to digital signatures for individuals, businesses, and organizations in their various online activities. The Vietnamese government aims for over 70% of citizens aged 18 and above to possess digital or personal electronic signatures by 2030.
