Jakarta Shifts to Online Learning Amid Volcanic Ash Fall

The Jakarta provincial government has announced the implementation of distance learning (PJJ) for all educational institutions starting Monday, September 7, 2026. This policy is a precautionary measure following the detection of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau spreading across Jakarta. According to the Head of the Jakarta Provincial Education Agency, Nahdiana, PJJ is being implemented to safeguard the health and safety of students, teachers, and educational staff. Learning will continue from home, adapted to the conditions and needs of each student. "We want to ensure that children continue to learn in a safe and comfortable environment. Therefore, for the time being, learning will be conducted from home. Parents do not need to panic, as the learning process will continue," Nahdiana stated in Jakarta on Sunday (6/9/2026). The Education Agency is coordinating with all educational institutions to ensure PJJ runs smoothly, providing assistance and monitoring to anticipate any obstacles during the learning process. "The safety and health of the children are the priority. We also urge parents to accompany their children during home learning and ensure that the information received comes from official sources," she explained. The Education Agency is also continuously coordinating with related regional government agencies and monitoring the development of air conditions and official information regarding the spread of Anak Krakatau's volcanic ash. "The learning policy will be evaluated according to the situation's progress," she said. The provincial government also urges the public to remain calm and not spread unverified information. "Residents are encouraged to follow government directives and maintain family health during this condition," Nahdiana said.
