New Shrimp Goby Species 'Oriens' Discovered in Banyuwangi

A new species of shrimpgoby has been discovered off the coast of Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia. Researchers from the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) have named the new species "Tomiyamichthys oriens" and reported on its unique characteristics. The discovery was announced in the journal ZooKeys on June 24, 2026, in a paper titled "Tomiyamichthys oriens, a new species of shrimpgoby (Teleostei, Gobiidae) from the coast of Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia." Kunto Wibowo, a researcher at BRIN's Center for Biosystematics and Evolution, shared interesting facts about the fish and its symbiotic relationship with the Tomiyamichthys genus with Mongabay Indonesia. The process of identifying T. oriens as a new species began with the study of two individuals collected from Banyuwangi's waters. These specimens were sourced from ornamental fish and marine biota exporters in Banyuwangi. Five scientists, along with two individuals from the exporting companies, collaborated on the research, giving the fish the English name 'Oriens Shrimpgoby.' The name 'oriens' was derived from Latin, meaning 'east' or 'sunrise.' This name was inspired by the fish's bright orange coloration and Banyuwangi's reputation as 'The Sunrise of Java.' Banyuwangi is the only known habitat for T. oriens, which thrives in sandy environments in shallow waters. This discovery further emphasizes the immense potential of Indonesian waters for marine biodiversity, much of which remains undocumented.
