16th Phan Chau Trinh Award Ceremony in Da Nang Honors 78 Individuals

The 16th Phan Chau Trinh Award ceremony was held on September 9 in Da Nang city, central Vietnam, commemorating the 154th anniversary of the birth of patriot and thinker Phan Chau Trinh. This annual award aims to honor students, university graduates, and researchers who have achieved outstanding academic and research accomplishments, fostering the tradition of learning in the region and encouraging the development of talented individuals. This year, a total of 78 individuals received the award, including two students who won medals in international mathematics competitions, six students who received first prize in provincial excellent student competitions, three students who won awards in national high school excellent student competitions, 52 university graduates who completed their studies with excellent or very good grades, two researchers who obtained doctoral degrees, one master's degree holder, and one resident physician. Phan Chau Trinh (born September 9, 1872) was a scholar proficient in Confucianism and knowledgeable in Western learning. Throughout his life, he championed democracy and social reform, advocating for national salvation through the elevation of the people's intellect and rights. His philosophy of "enlightening the people's minds, invigorating their spirits, and enriching their lives" remains highly relevant today. The award was established in 2001 to nurture the talents of young people in the Tam Ky-Phu Ninh region (now Tay Ho, Chien Dan, and Phu Ninh communes) and stimulate their desire to learn. Since 2010, following an agreement between Tam Ky city and Phu Ninh district, the award has been organized independently in each locality. The fact that the 16th ceremony was held in his hometown signifies the local community's strong interest in education and commitment to talent development. In his speech at the ceremony, Mr. Phan Van Ba, Vice Chairman of the Tay Ho Commune People's Committee, stated that the award's timing, coinciding with Phan Chau Trinh's birthday, reflects the special attention and responsibility of the leaders of Phu Ninh district (now Tay Ho, Chien Dan, and Phu Ninh communes). He emphasized that the Party committees, governments, and relevant departments at all levels consistently pay special attention to education, training, scholarships, and talent development. He further highlighted that the award is a creative implementation of the Party and State's policies that prioritize "education and training, science and technology as the top national priority." The award has been widely publicized and has received enthusiastic support from numerous agencies, organizations, students, researchers, and the public. Under Vietnam's one-party system, education and talent development are considered cornerstones of national development. Such recognition schemes serve to boost citizens' motivation to learn and contribute to overall societal progress. Particularly in Vietnam, a country experiencing rapid economic growth, cultivating individuals with advanced knowledge and skills is crucial for maintaining and enhancing its international competitiveness.
