M4.3 Shallow Earthquake Shakes Cianjur, Felt Across West Java

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck near Cianjur, West Java, on Tuesday (1/9) afternoon. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the tremors were felt across Sukabumi, Cianjur, Bandung, and Cibubur in East Jakarta. Hartanto, head of BMKG Region II South Tangerang, stated that intensity reports indicated a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) of III-IV in Cianjur (felt by many people indoors during the day), II-III in Sukabumi City, Cibadak, Nagrak, Warung Kondang, Cimahi, and Cilaku (felt as if a truck was passing), and II in Bandung City, Cibubur, and Sukaraja (felt by several people, light hanging objects swayed). "However, as of now, there have been no reports of building damage as a result of this earthquake," Hartanto added. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Cianjur Regency, West Java, at approximately 5:53 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB). BMKG's analysis indicated the earthquake had an updated magnitude of M 4.3. The epicenter was situated 10 km southwest of Cianjur Regency at a depth of 4 km. Based on the location and depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake was identified as a shallow earthquake caused by active fault activity. As of 6:15 PM WIB, BMKG monitoring showed no subsequent earthquake activity.
