Jakarta Schools to Reopen for Face-to-Face Learning as Volcanic Ash Subsides

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung ensures that learning activities at all Jakarta schools will be held face-to-face starting Wednesday, September 9, 2026. This decision was taken after the spread of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Jakarta area decreased. Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government implemented distance learning (PJJ) for two days, namely Monday and Tuesday, September 7-8, 2026, as a step to reduce exposure to volcanic ash to education units. Pramono said he had asked the DKI Jakarta Education Office to immediately issue a circular regarding the termination of PJJ. "For PJJ, tomorrow the school will return to normal. I have asked the Head of the Education Office to immediately issue a SE. Various reasons, one of which is because the flight itself is one of the parameters that is now running normally," said Pramono at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Central Jakarta, Tuesday, September 8. In addition, the DKI Provincial Government is still trying to get rain through weather modification operations (OMC) to help reduce the volcanic ash that is still in the air with the rain. Pramono said the Cessna Caravan aircraft had made five flights for cloud seeding on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. However, the cloud conditions were not considered to be sufficiently supportive of the formation of rain. "Actually today we have flown a Cessna aircraft as many as 5 sorties, but the clouds are still not enough. And hopefully this afternoon there is still time, space for it to rain," said Pramono. In this case, the Head of the DKI Jakarta Education Office, Nahdiana, then issued Circular Letter Number 92/SE/2026. In which, face-to-face learning in all DKI Jakarta education units will be carried out again starting Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Even though schools are reopening, the DKI Education Office asks educational units and the community to continue to take a number of preventive measures during the activity. Nahdiana urged education units to use masks when they are outside and limit activities outside. Schools are also asked to close doors and windows to prevent ash from entering the room. The cleaning of volcanic ash is also requested to be done by washing it first or using a damp cloth so that the ash does not fly again.
