Anak Krakatau Eruption Halts Jakarta Airport Operations, Flights Diverted

Volcanic activity in Indonesia is impacting its air travel network. Following an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta was temporarily closed until 5:30 PM Western Indonesian Time on Sunday, September 6, 2026. This measure was taken based on a report from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicating that volcanic ash could disrupt safe flight operations. According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, some flights bound for Jakarta, particularly those of Garuda Indonesia, will be diverted to Kertajati Airport in West Java. For these passengers, the government is preparing bus services and the Whoosh high-speed train from Kertajati to Jakarta. Additionally, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has announced increased train services to Jakarta from Surabaya, Malang, Semarang, and Yogyakarta. Airports in these cities remain operational. Six airports in total have been closed due to the eruption: Radin Inten II Airport (Lampung), Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Tangerang), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (East Jakarta), Pondok Cabe Airport (Jakarta), Budiarto Airport (Tangerang), and Husein Sastranegara Airport (Bandung). Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung was declared closed for flights at noon on the same day after indications of volcanic ash impact. Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi instructed airlines to promptly provide passengers with the latest information in case of flight cancellations and to advise them against coming to the airport. He also urged for swift processing of refunds for canceled tickets. The government is urging the public to take precautions against volcanic ash from the Anak Krakatau eruption, recommending the use of masks and glasses when going out, and washing hands and face upon returning home.
