Chiang Rai Police Seize 600kg of Crystal Meth After High-Speed Chase, Four Arrested

CHIANG RAI – Police intercepted a massive drug smuggling operation, safely seizing 600 kilograms of crystal meth after a high-speed chase. The intense high-speed chase ended with four arrests after the desperate suspects crashed into police cars twice to avoid capture. The dramatic events began late at night in Mae Lao district. Acting on a secret tip, local authorities learned that a drug ring planned to move illegal narcotics. The smugglers aimed to secretly transport the drugs from the north down to the central region. To avoid main highways, the smugglers decided to use smaller, secondary roads. Police soon spotted a convoy of three vehicles leaving the city area. The suspicious group included a white pickup truck, a grey van, and a white sedan. The suspects quickly realized they were being watched and tried to change their route. They drove along a quiet irrigation canal to bypass a known drug checkpoint. However, the police easily coordinated with another checkpoint ahead in the Phan district. Officers successfully stopped the first vehicle, a white pickup truck, at the checkpoint. They immediately arrested the 31-year-old driver from Lampang province. Seeing this happen, the other two vehicles quickly turned around to escape. This sparked a highly dangerous police chase on the main highway. The grey van, desperate to escape, crashed violently into a pursuing police car. It kept driving until officers used a marked police vehicle to completely block the road near a local hospital. The van crashed directly into the police blockade, finally bringing the wild chase to an end. Inside the damaged van, police found 24 large sacks tightly packed together. These heavy sacks contained an incredible 600 kilograms of crystal meth, also known as “ice.” The 31-year-old van driver from Chiang Mai was immediately arrested on the spot. Meanwhile, other police units also caught up with the white sedan and arrested its 30-year-old female driver. The immediate danger was finally over, but the police work was not finished yet. Police quickly expanded their investigation using fresh evidence from the captured suspects. This vital clue led them to a rented room in the neighboring Lamphun province. There, they safely arrested a 70-year-old man and seized a fourth vehicle connected to the crime. In total, four suspects are now in police custody facing very serious legal charges. Officers also seized all four vehicles used in this massive drug smuggling attempt. Authorities are still investigating to see if more people are involved in this criminal drug ring. Ultimately, this major bust is a huge win for law enforcement in northern Thailand. It sends a very strong message to any criminal groups operating in the region.
