250kg Crystal Meth Seized in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai; Drug Network Targeted

CHIANG RAI – Military forces and drug enforcement officers intercepted a major narcotics smuggling operation in Chiang Rai late Tuesday night. Authorities seized 250 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as ice, after a suspect abandoned a getaway vehicle near a busy shopping area. The coordinated operation took place near the Lotus supermarket in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai. While the driver escaped into the dark, security personnel managed to secure the vehicle along with the entire shipment of illegal drugs. The operation began after military intelligence units received a critical tip-off regarding an upcoming smuggling attempt in the northern border area. Officers were alerted that a white Honda City sedan bearing Bangkok license plates would transport a large drug shipment through the region. In response, troops from the 3rd Cavalry Company of the Thap Chao Tak Task Force teamed up with local agencies. They joined forces with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the Royal Thai Police to establish surveillance checkpoints across target locations. At around 9:30 PM on July 21, officers spotted the targeted white sedan parked in front of the shopping center. The team maintained a covert watch on the vehicle to identify the suspects involved in the transport. Two hours later, a young driver entered the vehicle and drove toward a side alley next to the store. Realizing that law enforcement officers were trailing him, the driver quickly pulled over near the parking lot entrance, opened the door, and fled on foot. A thorough search of the abandoned sedan revealed multiple sacks packed with crystal methamphetamine. Officers found the illegal drugs stashed inside the passenger cabin and packed tightly within the rear trunk. Police officially seized the 250 kilograms of crystal meth along with the sedan for forensic testing. Investigators at the Mae Sai Police Station are currently examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to track down the fleeing suspect and bust the broader drug trafficking network.
