Cambodia-Myanmar Summit Strengthens Bilateral Ties

Cambodian Acting Head of State Hun Sen considers the visit of Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Cambodia a significant step in further strengthening bilateral friendly relations. Speaking at a press conference following the summit meeting between the two leaders in Phnom Penh on September 11, Senate Spokesperson Chea Thireak stated that the visit is a crucial element in reinforcing the bonds between Cambodia and Myanmar. The meeting took place at the Senate's Peace Palace between Acting Head of State Hun Sen and President Min Aung Hlaing. According to Chea Thireak, the talks included discussions on regional issues in addition to bilateral matters. Hun Sen recalled the 70-year history of relations between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1955, noting that both nations celebrated their 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025. He emphasized that various activities have been undertaken to deepen bilateral ties. Meanwhile, President Min Aung Hlaing expressed deep admiration for Cambodia's remarkable development, particularly noting the impressive progress in infrastructure in Phnom Penh compared to his visit in 2017. The President shared with Hun Sen the importance of further developing bilateral relations through cooperation in areas such as politics, trade, investment, culture, people-to-people exchanges, and tourism. He also indicated the need for both the executive and legislative branches to work together to promote the growth of Cambodia-Myanmar relations.
